From books to web sites to pod casts to multiple viewings of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0028RXXE8\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B0028RXXE8&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=robsteinercom\">HBO series <em>Rome<\/em> (both seasons)<\/a>, I&#8217;ve covered a lot.  <\/p>\n<p>Obviously I&#8217;ve barely scratched the surface of all the available material, but here are some of the resources I found helpful and\/or interesting during my research.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1400066638\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=1400066638&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=robsteinercom\">The Rise of Rome by Anthony Everitt<\/a><br \/>\nConcise and entertaining history of how Rome went from a backwater trading post in 800 BCE to the world&#8217;s greatest empire in 1 AD.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1846072840\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=1846072840&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=robsteinercom\">Ancient Rome by Simon Baker<\/a><br \/>Looking for an overview of Rome&#8217;s entire history?  This book covers the entire history of the Roman Empire, from its mythical origens to the abdication of the last Emperor in 476 AD. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0312377622\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0312377622&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=robsteinercom\">Roma by Steven Saylor<\/a><br \/>It&#8217;s Everitt&#8217;s <em>Rise of Rome<\/em> meets a John Jakes novel.  <em>Roma<\/em> follows two Roman families from the founding to the rise of Octavian Caesar Augustus.  I took a lot of inspiration from this one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0312357443\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0312357443&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=robsteinercom\">A Gladiator Only Dies Once by Steven Saylor<\/a><br \/>Short stories about Gordianus the Finder, an ancient Roman private investigator.  Great look at life in everyday ancient Rome.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehistoryofrome.typepad.com\/\">History of Rome Podcasts by Mike Duncan<\/a><br \/>Better than the college history courses I took on the subject!  Mike is passionate about Rome and he knows his stuff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.novaroma.org\/nr\/Choosing_a_Roman_name\">Nova Roma: Choosing a Roman Name<\/a><br \/>Lots of Roman names in my books, of course, and I would&#8217;ve been lost without this web site&#8217;s explanations of Roman naming customs and lists of common Roman family names, first names, and nicknames.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It helps that I love all things ancient Rome; I&#8217;ve spent almost as much time researching my MUSES OF ROMA series as I have writing it.
